Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT)

Quickly screen for organic cerebral dysfunction in both children and adults

The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) is a quick and easy neuropsychological screening tool that accurately detects brain damage and cognitive changes. It's a simple task where participants match numbers to symbols within a time limit. Even individuals with normal or above-average intelligence can perform poorly on the SDMT if they have brain dysfunction. The test is adaptable, allowing for written or spoken responses to accommodate those with motor or speech impairments. Its use of geometric figures and numbers makes it relatively culture-free, suitable for people from diverse backgrounds.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

Studies documented in the manual have shown the test effective in a wide range of clinical applications, including:

  • Differentiation of brain-damaged from psychotic or depressive patients

  • Early detection of senile dementia and Huntington’s disease

  • Differential diagnosis of children with learning disorders and reading problems

  • Assessment of recovery from closed-head injury

  • Assessment of change in cognitive functioning over time and/or with therapy in individuals with traumatic, vascular, neoplastic, and other brain insults
