The self-rated Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS) has been developed to assess the frequency and severity of PTSD symptoms and aid in treatment. By separately assessing frequency and severity, the scale highlights whether there has been a global improvement in both dimensions or a more selective improvement in subjective distress, even if symptoms persist.
The 20 items in the scale, an adaption of the previous 17-item DTS, reflect the symptoms diagnostic of PTSD as defined in the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The scale covers all types of trauma: accident, combat, sexual, criminal assault, natural disaster, torture, burns, loss of property, near death experiences, and bereavement.
ASSESSMENT SCALES
Intrusion: persistently re-experiencing the traumatic event
Avoidance/Numbing: avoiding trauma-related stimuli after the trauma
Hyperarousal: trauma-related arousal and reactivity that began or worsened after the traumatic event
